As our Quality Assurance Engineer Manager (Automation), you’ll be developing processes and managing our main QA projects including integrating our growing automation suite into our CD pipeline and automating accessibility and security testing, while contributing to our manual and automated test suite.

This role will report directly to the VP of Technology. Primary duties will include organizing and writing automated tests, developing strategies to test accessibility and security and incorporating our automated suite into our deployment pipeline. This role is on a growing team, where our process and methods are still being formed, so we’re looking for someone who is collaborative and can think strategically.

Job Requirements:

• Excellent writing and communication skills
• 6+ years working as a quality assurance engineer with at least 3 years of leadership experience preferred (this role will be player/coach)
• 3+ years experience writing automated tests and able to present a scalable solution for our automation needs
• 1+ year of experience working in Python
• Experience incorporating automated tests into a continuous delivery cycle
• Domain knowledge of WCAG guidelines
• Knowledge in multiple types of testing and how to best use each type to suit a project’s needs (E2E, Integration, UAT, Regression, etc.)
• Experience designing, and maintaining automated tests, executing REST API tests, Git (or other source control management equivalent)
• Ability to identify potential failures in software as well as the ability to track and report existing defects with precision and efficiency

Why is this role important?

Test Automation for QA reduces repeated manual testing and ensures that regression testing is completed for every release. Presence QA focuses on usability as well as functionality. Test automation will cover both functionality, user acceptance testing, boundary and negative testing, and complex data dependency scenarios. The goal for test automation is to be able to have tests be comprehensive so that every release goes out with a very high degree of confidence that the features for our users continue to work well with minimal surprises.

What will you do at Presence?

• Create a test automation framework: work with stakeholders to draft a requirements proposal for review and approval; implement a skeleton framework with example use cases for review; and complete the framework according to feedback from stakeholders
• Develop and maintain test data creation tool by working with backend developers
• Working with the QA team to write test cases that cover functional, negative, boundary, and UI expectations for test automation
• Maintaining a track record of test runs, updating test cases that have been impacted by feature changes, and working with software developers on ways to improve test automation

What are we looking for?

• 4+ years experience testing software, being involved in the software development process and with release engineering processes doing functional, regression, and UI testing.
• 4+ years strong programming experience, preferably in JavaScript, and/or Python, with experience in current testing tools, e.g., Playwright, Cypress, etc.
• Development experience using the primary software engineering principles of modularity, reusability, abstraction, etc

About You

We are looking for a Test Automation Engineering Lead to develop and execute automated tests to ensure product quality. Test Automation Engineer responsibilities include designing and implementing tests, debugging and defining corrective actions. As a QA Analyst at Defiant you will be required to:

• Find new bugs in a web application, WordPress plugin or back-end application, or system.
• Discover the steps to reproduce a bug.
• Document the steps in a well-written bug report which you will file.
• Reproduce bugs reported by a customer or reported to you by our customer service team. This may require some research on your part, working with the CS team to understand what the customer reported, and finding out how to reproduce the issue.

Figuring Out What to Test and Testing Broadly

One of the skills that we value highly in great QA analysts is the ability to test broadly. What we mean by this is, rather than testing the minimum requirements when verifying a bug, we expect our analysts to come up with creative tests that may reveal problems in new code. This requires anticipating ways that a fix may affect other parts of an application or data.

Specific skills and activities that help with our approach of "testing broadly" are:

• Looking at the PHP code in a pull request, that a developer has implemented, to understand what changed, and get an idea of what else a code change may break, then testing those parts of a system.
• Using a SQL client to access the database that an application is interacting with and looking at the table structure and data. Understanding how a developer's code changes the data, and coming up with new tests, using this knowledge, that may reveal a bug.
• Looking at server error logs to determine if a test is failing silently, or creating output in the error log that may reveal a new area that can be tested to identify a bug.
• Look at the Javascript browser console to find errors that code may be silently generating, that could reveal a bug or other potential problem.

We are currently seeking an experienced QA Manager to join our growing Engineering Team and manage our existing automated quality assurance efforts as we continue to improve the experience of our Sertifi Agreement Platform (large-scale SaaS web application).

In your role as QA Manager, you will be expected to continue developing your own skills through a mixed balance of hands-on coding along with mentoring and day-to-day management responsibility for our existing team members.

You will work closely with other QA Engineers, Scrum Teams, Security, DevOps and Product to build upon and improve the functional aspects of our existing automated testing efforts including integration of our automated testing into the DevOps lifecycle. This position will report to our Director of Engineering.

Challenges You’ll Tackle:

Day to Day

• Establish, document, and implement quality assurance automation best practices
• Mentor and develop the skills of existing team members, as well as continually improve your own automation and development skillset
• Work in an Agile environment where innovation, teamwork, and creativity are the pillars of success across our 8 scrum teams
• Lead and manage existing QA team members to successfully meet their sprint deliverables and personal goals.
• Ensure that every phase and feature of the solution is tested, and that any potential issue is identified and fixed before the product goes live
• Work with Product and Scrum teams to extract test scenarios from business requirements
• Evaluate and document results of manual and automated tests into software release notes for our bi-weekly software releases
• Develop, document, and maintain functional test cases and other test artifacts such as test data and data validation including test results
• Work with the product, support, and customer success teams to replicate customer issues and application use cases when required

Leadership Expectations

• Provide quality assurance expertise to fellow team members and other scrum teams on best practices and innovative approaches to testing our bi-weekly software releases
• Manage the performance and career alignment of your team members, conducting regular 1:1s and formal annual appraisal reviews
• Focus on employee retention by providing feedback, aligning career goals, and fostering the growth of each team member
• Forecast hiring needs and collaborate with the People Team on job description creation, interviewing, and offer negotiation
• Forecast budget needs, working closely with your Director and our Finance team when asked
• Represent your team at our bi-weekly Scrum of Scrums which includes each of our scrum team leads, security, DevOps, and product teams to report progress being made against the sprint deliverables and identify any roadblocks that quality assurance is facing
• Ensure that our approaches to automated (and manual) testing are well defined, planned and executed
• Foster a culture of self-organizing teams through delegation of tasks/projects to fellow team members
• Own the assignment of testing workload into a release testing plan to be compiled and distributed at the beginning of every sprint
• Collaborate closely with one (or more) of our 8 scrum teams to promote software quality standards

Future Challenges

• Define and implement a long-term strategy and approach to both performance and stress testing at the API, micro-services, and database layers
• Continue to champion the adoption of automated testing integrated into our DevOps lifecycle
• Develop and implement an improved and repeatable process for defect tracking, logging, reporting, and trend analysis
• As Sertifi continues to grow and evolve we need you to be flexible in your role and from time to time you may be asked to participate in an on-call out of hours Support rotation.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline with 4 years of test automation experience developing and executing end-to-end tests for complex systems, preferably at a SaaS company
• Must have prior experience in both managing a Quality Assurance team, as well as hands-on experience in a QA role
• Proven success in building high-performing teams, including previous recruitment/hiring experience
• Strong communication skills and the ability to deliver prompt feedback as needed
• Solid experience using SQL to validate test results would be consider a must have skill
• Proficiency with OOP languages such as Python, familiarity with C# or Angular 8 is a plus
• Experience developing and executing manual and automated tests for complex web applications, preferably at a SaaS company
• Expert understanding of web application design and debugging skills including micro-services. You will need to be familiar with accessing data sources (Databases, Web Services, APIs)
• Solid understanding of testing across distributed applications utilizing message bus technology and architecture
• Experience utilizing distributed source control such as Git would be preferred
• Exceptional communication, interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and prioritize both your own and your team’s workload
• Ability to solve complex problems in a systematic and organized way
• Experience developing and maintaining formal test documentation and reports including quality assurance metrics
• Experience with any of the following is a plus: Salesforce, Selenium WebDriver, Load Ninja, Zephyr, Robot Framework, BrowserStack, SOAP and REST API testing (Postman and Ready API), JIRA and Confluence
• Exposure to cloud platforms such as Azure as well as build and deployment automation (CI/CD pipelines) would be preferred
